The way I teach is by promoting ranks or sashes. The students, however, are not required to wear their sash in class. The sash is only for personal achievement  and recognition, and nothing more. You do not need to wrap yourself with a belt or sash to show how skillful you are (“belts only hold your pants up”). Originally, the founder of Jeet Kune Do had a very unique ranking system that consisted of different colored Yin and Yang. The seven sashes represent the way the students should progress through my way of teaching, in which is a very strong foundation from Wing Chun Gung Fu. Once the students completes the seven ranks to Black sash level, the student has to complete the three levels of training, Partiality, Fluidity and Emptiness. That is when the student receives full certification in the level they have fully completed with hard work and years of commitment and full knowledge of the art. I DO NOT hand over these last three levels very lightly. The students must be able to defend themselves under any conditions and circumstances without any hesitation or prearrangements. The mind and the body must be one and the thinking level no longer exists. All moves should be executed without thinking. |
